Regatta Forecast Looks Good

The weather seems to, finally, be cooperating.  Chance of showers and thundershowers ending by mid-morning tomorrow and conditions improving through the weekend.  Winds SW to WNW anywhere from 4-8 depending on which weather service you look at.  Gust velocities also vary from one service to the next.

All in all it looks like a good weekend for racing.  I hope you all received you Sailing Instructions last week; if not, I have some extras printed out.  See you at the skippers meeting 10:00 A.M. on the veranda.

Postponement

The 2009 Sardis Cup Regatta has been postponed.  The new dates are Sept. 26-27.

The weather just wasn’t cooperative.  The current long range forecast still has chance of rain for next weekend but no thunderstorms.  That is 8 and 9 days out and could change.

Stay in touch.

PHRF

Found a PHRF table and added a link.  This table is an Adobe .PDF file so you can use the Adobe ‘find’ to look up your boat (or your competitor’s).

I know that Rick has been using a table for Chesapeake Bay but I don’t know the address for that.  This one gives the Low, High and Average across the country and might be more adaptable for us since we really have conditions different from the east coast.  We are more like the rest of the inland lakes than Chesapeake Bay and the Average might smooth out the extremes.  Just a thought.

Also, it lists the various models of many boats which could be useful in tweaking our handicaps.

‘Intro To Racing’ Link

The Intro To Racing link is working again.  They must have fixed whatever the problem was.

Bear in mind that the starting sequence and flags used in the illustrations are not necessarily what will be used.  The local regatta organizers and race committee may set these and the course to be sailed.  For example: we have been using a six minute start and different flags.

The link is on the left below the Calendar.

Re: Race Course

I have been advised that my presentation at the Sept. 5 meeting might have sounded like I was advocating a specific race course length.  I wasn’t.

I used a triangular course 2 mi. on a side as an example because the numbers worked out easily.  The point I was trying to make was that, a triangular course might be shortened in several ways.  The main objective is to sail a course with a known length and if conditions or time require shortening then an acurately laid out course allows shortening to another known length.

I am sorry for any confusion.  With all the noise at the end of the veranda I found it hard to stay focused.
