Sailing Instructions:2010 Sardis Cup Regatta

Sailing Instructions: 2010 Sardis Cup Regatta                Sept. 18-19

Sardis Cup

Skippers’ Meeting 10:00 A.M. Saturday. Race 1 start approx. 12:00 noon. Race 2 start as soon as possible after all boats have finished Race 1. Race 3 start approx. 2:00 P.M. Sunday. Fish fry and trophy awards after Race 3 on the veranda.

Any of these instructions may be modified by the Race Committee and communicated to the fleet before or during the races.

Courses:

Wind and weather being unpredictable, the Race Committee may designate one of the following courses to be sailed and may change the course of a race in progress.  Course to be sailed will be indicated by a flag displayed on the committee boat for the duration of the prestart through the finish of each race.  If a decision is made to modify the course of a race in progress,  it will be indicated by a change of flag on the committee boat in sufficient time for the first boat around to take appropriate action.

Green Course (Green Flag) will be from the start around the windward, jibe, leeward, windward and leeward marks in that order and finishing upwind from the last leeward mark rounding. The start/finish line is a “closed gate” and may not be crossed enroute between the leeward and windward marks in either direction (doing so is to be treated the same as touching any other mark and incurs a one turn penalty).

Blue Course (Blue Flag) Will be the same as the Green Course except that the last leeward mark rounding will be omitted and the finish will be downwind from the last windward mark rounding. The start/finish line is a “closed gate” and may not be crossed enroute between the leeward and windward marks (doing so is to be treated the same as touching any other mark and incurs a one turn penalty).

Yellow Course (Yellow Flag) will omit both second roundings of the windward and leeward marks and finish upwind directly from the rounding of the leeward mark.

Orange Course (Orange Flag) shall be a windward-leeward course rounding the windward mark, then the leeward mark and finishing upwind. The start/finish line is a “closed gate” and may not be crossed enroute between the windward and leeward marks (doing so is to be treated the same as touching any other mark and incurs a one turn penalty).

Red Course (Red Flag) shall be a windward-leeward course rounding only the windward mark and finishing downwind from that rounding.

Layout of marks:

The basic layout shall be triangular consisting of a windward mark, a jibe mark and a leeward mark with the start/finish halfway between the leeward and windward marks and the start being to windward. The location and distance between marks shall be solely at the discretion of the Race Committee. The direction of sail shall be determined and announced by the Race Committee depending on existing and expected wind direction.

Signals:

Although the Race Committee may attempt to notify the fleet of course changes,  by other means, the primary signal shall be by display of flags on the committee boat. There are five colors; Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue and Green. Every course flag change other than during the start will be accompanied by one or more long horn blasts.

Start:

The start shall consist of a six minute sequence as follows. At least fifteen minutes prior to the beginning of this sequence the committee boat will display a red flag (in addition to the ‘Course Flag’) as a signal for the fleet to assemble.

The starting sequence shall commence with the lowering of the red flag and a short horn blast.

At four minutes before the start the yellow flag will go up accompanied by a short blast.

At two minutes before the start the yellow flag will be lowered accompanied by a short blast.

At the start the green flag  will be displayed accompanied by a short blast.

In the event of a general recall there will be two long blasts along with the red flag. All boats will return behind the starting line and the six minute sequence will begin again.

Individual boat(s) will be recalled by one long blast and hail but no flag signal. The boat(s) recalled shall return around an end of the starting line to recross the line keeping clear of the boats that had a good start. If a recalled boat fails to keep clear and fouls another during its restart it shall execute a two turn penalty as soon as safely possible after restarting.

Abandonment:

Should a race or all racing for the day need to be abandoned the Race Committee shall, by all means necessary, ensure that all boats are notified before retiring.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

Well, we found time to go to the lake Saturday. There was wind in the A.M. as we left home. There was wind that you could see moving the trees even from a moving vehicle on the trip down. There was wind as we stowed our gear and got ready to leave the slip. There was wind as we cleared the island at the mouth of the harbor and hoisted sails.

Then….. there was NO WIND. It took over an hour to sail less than a mile. Heat was a killer. First Mate was first stage heat exhaustion (stopped sweating) so we motored back as quickly as possible.

Cap’n Smitty helped me secure Serendipity while the Mate was driven up to the shade on the veranda by Oliver. Thanks, Smitty!

It has to get better. It can’t get any worse.

My Season Delayed

Well, I had planned on being on the water this weekend and hoped to see some of you there.  Instead…I tripped and fell in my barn Monday evening, falling against my wood splitter and breaking a rib.  It doesn’t look like we will be sailing for a few weeks since I have to be careful how I move and can’t lift and pull.  As soon as the doctor says I can, I will be there though.  Need to feel the wind in my face.

Until then, y’all enjoy and think of me when you are on that perfect reach.

Jim

The Season Is Upon Us!

Ahoy!  Spring is here!  Time to go sailing!  Lets make this season better than last. Hopefully, Dutch Treat is repaired and back in the water.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all again REAL SOON.   We need to try to set up a meeting soon but my own schedule is pretty full ’til May.  I don’t even think we will be able to go for a sail before then but we’ll see.

As far as the club organization, we REALLY need to get something going.  This sort of, kind of club thing is driving me bonkers.  Either we want to or not.  I figure if there are at least six or eight we can do it and then recruit.  I think Charly, Frank, Seth, Mike, the two Daves and I should be enough to get this thing started.  I realize that Mike is the only power boat (houseboat) skipper but maybe he could help recruit on that side.

That’s it for now.
